GAVI supports civil society organisations (CSOs) because in many countries CSOs are essential for delivering health services including immunisation.
CSOs have been working in the field of public health for many years and are often able to reach populations that are difficult to access for immunisation because they live in remote or under-serviced areas. Often complementing government programmes, they also strengthen and support health infrastructure and raise awareness. CSOs can also be influential in helping shape government policy, and are directly involved in its implementation.
GAVI funding is available in 2007-2008 to help strengthen the voice of CSOs and their participation in immunisation programmes and related health matters. US$22 million has been allocated to support pilot initiatives in 10 countries:
GAVI's civil society task team was created in 2005 to develop strategies for the enhanced engagement of civil society groups in order to support GAVI's mission.
These grants are the outcome of a country-led process: governments and established national coordinating bodies are able to apply within the framework of HSS proposals.
