Vaccines are delicate biological products, easily damaged if handled incorrectly.
The WHO-UNICEF Effective Vaccine Store Management (EVSM) (PDF) initiative encourages countries to procure and maintain equipment and to adopt management and training practices that fully protect vaccines in primary and intermediate vaccine stores. EVSM is based upon quality assurance principles: products must be correctly stored and handled throughout the chain from point of manufacture to point of use, with reliable, detailed records to validate this.
The Vaccine Management Assessment (PDF) complements the package of guidance, assessment and training materials developed for the EVSM initiative and is designed to enable rapid assessment of vaccine-management procedures in a national vaccine stores, followed by similar assessments at a sample of sub-national stores and service points.
