Injection safety support (INS)

GAVI will contribute to the provision of auto-disable syringes, reconstitution syringes and safety boxes in quantities sufficient to vaccinate all women, and infants less than one year old, targeted in national immunisation schedules with the following vaccines:

  • Two doses of tetanus-containing vaccines such as TT, Td and DT;
  • Three doses of DTP vaccine;
  • One dose of measles, measles-rubella (MR), or measles-mumps and rubella (MMR);
  • Three doses of polio-containing vaccine, such as IPV;
  • Three doses of hepatitis B-containing vaccine;
  • One dose of BCG;
  • One dose of yellow fever vaccine.

Countries that can demonstrate secure and sufficient support to maintain use of autodisable syringes and safety boxes may apply instead for grants towards injection-safety activities. The maximum value of such grants will be equivalent to the cost (at the prices obtained by UNICEF) for autodisable syringes and safety boxes for vaccines included in the standard WHO schedule for routine vaccination of infants for a three-year period. If products are purchased with the grant, countries must be able to demonstrate that they comply with national and international standards recognised by WHO and UNICEF.
