12 November will mark the third annual World Pneumonia Day, to raise awareness about the leading killer of children under five around the world. Join us this year and pledge to blog for World Pneumonia Day.
We're asking bloggers and tweeters to promote the day by posting about this important issue on World Pneumonia.
Please sign up to blog to show your support for World Pneumonia Day this year. Our partners have already started using our hashtag #WPD2011, so you can join us as we countdown to the big day!
The idea behind our Blog Carnival is simple. Pneumonia has been called “the silent killer” because so few people know the dramatic impact it has had on children growing up in the poorest countries. We want to create a lot of noise around this global health burden and encourage people to take action.
When writing your blog, here are a few facts to keep in mind:
- Every 20 seconds, pneumonia takes the life of a child. It’s the biggest killer of children under the age of five in developing countries. Vaccines can prevent many of these deaths.
- For first time in history vaccines against the leading cause of pneumonia are reaching children in developing countries at nearly the same time they reach children in high income countries. This is unprecedented.
- The introduction of these vaccines is a cornerstone of GAVI’s ambitious plan to ensure that all children have equal access to life-saving vaccines.
- World Pneumonia Day, on 12 November, is an opportunity to highlight the power of vaccines to prevent millions of child deaths and to celebrate the historic achievements of the rapid introduction of these new vaccines to combat pneumonia. No child should die of a disease we can prevent.
Please join us and make the pledge now to blog on 12 November. All World Pneumonia Day Bloggers will receive updates with information on the day. Thank you so much for your support!
