The GAVI Alliance has been providing support to poor countries since 2000 to improve routine immunisation services, provide safe injections, and introduce new and underused vaccines (Hepatitis B, Haemophilus influenzae type b vaccine, yellow fever and a second dose of measles vaccine).
Since 2007, GAVI has also worked to improve national health systems with health system strengthening support. (HSS). In the same year GAVI began providing support to countries to introduce pneumococcal vaccine and rotavirus vaccine.
GAVI has approved a total of US$ 4.1 billion to countries for the period 2000 to 2015 (as at August 2008).
When an application is approved, the country is given an estimate of the total amount of multi-year GAVI financial support. Each year this estimate is recalculated according to revised immunisation targets, outlined in the country’s annual progress reports.
