Showing on BBC World’s Survivor’s Guide on Tuesday 10 June at 1930 GMT - two young women health extension workers in Ethiopia
This acclaimed BBC series which airs “real stories of courage and determination from around the world” tonight features two friends Zewde Getahun and Fantaye Yenehu, working in their community, providing 16 different kinds of health service. They are among Ethiopia’s 24,000 health extension workers, whose training is funded by GAVI’s health system strengthening support. Tonight’s film shows how these two young women affect so many areas of their neighbours’ lives - some of the services they provide are related to environmental health and hygiene, like teaching people how to build and use latrines, how to dispose of liquid and solid waste, to separate people and livestock, and how to take care of their personal hygiene. Others are more medical, such as immunisation for children against eight different diseases, and against tetanus for women, plus oral rehydration salts for anyone with diarrhea. They also provide family planning services and HIV prevention and assist in childbirth.

Significant increases in immunisation rates serve as among the most promising trends for reducing childhood mortality and achieving MDG 4.
