The HSS programme outlined in this proposal will be implemented in the Northern 15 states of Sudan, benefiting a total population of over 30 million. It aims to achieve improved immunisation coverage and access to immunisation services and to essential child and maternal Primary Health Care for undeserved population.The objectives shall be achieved through strengthening of decentralised health services, mobilisation of workforce, outreach activities and other measures.

The government of has decided to introduce new vaccines against Haemophilus influenzae b (Hib) and hepatitis B (hepB) vaccines in pentavalent form (DTP-HepB -Hib) in 2008. The proposal is based on increasing immunisation rates and on the comprehensive Multi-Year Plan which aims to lift up immunisation coverage to 90%.

Moldova is among the countries with high prevalence of hepatitis B and Hib infections. According to WHO estimates, the average number of Hib cases per year is just over 1000 and the average number of deaths around 40. Therefore the government is applying for GAVI support to introduce the Hib antigen together with DTP in tetravalent form and after the end of the current National Immunisation Plan in pentavalent form.

As health problems and child mortality have a significantly higher incidence in the poorer groups of the population, Nicaragua aims to use HSS to improve comprehensive child and maternal care. Activities envisioned comprise training of health workers and the delivery of a basic health care package in remote areas.

In its 2007-2009 Multi-Year Plan, the country is proposing to introduce the Hib vaccine as part of the pentavalent, from 2008 and the pneumococcal vaccine in 2009 to increase the spectrum of vaccines protecting children from vaccine preventable diseases. These infections belong to the principal causes of morbidity and mortality in the DRC. The total amount requested from GAVI is approx. US$ 44 million.
