The governments intends to introduce the vaccine against hepatits B into the routine EPI from 2006 as component of the tetravalent vaccine, including the antigens against DTP. The strategies to increase immunisation coverage are included in the multi-year strategic plan. Government planning is based on the Global Immunization Vision and Strategy (GIVS) from WHO/UNICEF.

Proposal outlines Afghanistan's needs and plans to roll out Tetravalent vaccine (DTP-HepB) or hepatitis B vaccine monovalent. Introduction will be in 2006, the monovalent would be introduced in phases, first in the central region which has 27% of the total  target population. A total of 257,051 children under one year, in central region will be immunised with the first dose of Hepatitis B vaccine in 2006.

The government seeks GAVI support to strengthen routine immunisation (ISS) and introduce a new combination liquid tetravalent vaccine (DTP-Hib). Despite an excellent health infrastructure and national information health systems, the immunisation service delivery systems are struggling to maintain adequate coverage levels for different antigens included in the schedule due to several issues identified in previous EPI reviews: poor systematic outreach, poor community demand, poor transport and communication systems.

Sierra Leone has benefited from GAVI support for ISS, yellow fever vaccine and INS. Having reached the immunisation coverage needed to be ligible for NVS, the country is now applying for support to introduce hepB and Hib vaccines in the pentavalent form. Support will be spread over a period of eight years and will amount to approx. US$ 6.4 million. The ninth year, the government will take over full responsibility of the procurement of the new vaccine and supplies.
