Geneva, 15 March 2011 - The boards and staff of the GAVI Alliance and International Finance Facility for Immunisation (IFFIm) would like to offer our very deepest condolences to the people of Japan, many of whom support GAVI's mission through the purchase of IFFIm "Vaccine Bonds".
We have all been deeply shocked by the massive loss of life and damage to property following last week's earthquake and tsunami. Our thoughts go out to the people of Japan at this tragic time.
Since 2008, many thousands of Japanese savers have invested the equivalent of more than US$ 1.5 billion in "Vaccine Bonds" issued by the International Finance Facility for Immunisation (IFFIm) helping support GAVI's life-saving mission to save children's lives and protect people's health by accelerating access to immunisation in the world's poorest countries.
