Amsterdam, Netherlands, 14 February 2013 – The GAVI Alliance was awarded €2.5 million by the Dutch Postcode Lottery at the donor’s annual Goed Geld Gala last night, attended by dozens of recipient charitable organisations and honoured guests, including former US President Bill Clinton.

The €2.5 million donation (about US$ 3.3 million) will be doubled under the GAVI Matching Fund by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, with the funds used to buy life-saving vaccines for the world’s poorest children.

Dutch Postcode Lottery becomes the ninth member of the GAVI Matching Fund, under which the Gates Foundation and the UK Government match donations to GAVI made by private organisations, their employees and customers.

The Dutch Postcode Lottery gives half the price of every purchased ticket to charitable organisations, with recipients announced at the annual gala. This year, it donated a record €291 million to more than 90 organisations thanks to lottery ticket purchases by 2.5 million players. It is the largest charity in the Netherlands and the third-largest private charity in the world.

“The generosity of the Dutch Postcode Lottery and the Dutch people is remarkable,” said GAVI Alliance Board Chair Dagfinn Høybråten. “Their contribution to GAVI will help immunise hundreds of thousands of children in the world’s poorest countries, further demonstrating the power of public-private partnerships to help the world’s most vulnerable and bring critical visibility to the importance of child vaccination.”

Dutch Postcode Head of Charities Judith Lingeman notes that, “for most children in Europe, vaccination against meningitis, measles or rubella is common practice. Unfortunately, for many children in the world vaccines are not accessible. The Postcode Lottery is proud to help GAVI with its ambition to provide vaccines against the five most deadly diseases for all children, specifically in fragile states.”

The GAVI Matching Fund has both raised funds and brought significant private sector skills to help GAVI overcome roadblocks and provide visibility to the cause of immunisation. Its corporate partners in the initiative comprise Absolute Return for Kids (ARK), Anglo American, Children’s Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF), Comic Relief, Dutch Postcode Lottery, J.P. Morgan, “la Caixa” Foundation, LDS Charities and Vodafone.

GAVI is funded by the following governments, as well as private, corporate and foundation donors: Absolute Return for Kids (ARK), Anglo American plc, Australia, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Brazil, Canada, The Children’s Investment Fund Foundation (UK), Comic Relief, Denmark, Dutch Postcode Lottery, European Commission (EC), France, Germany, His Highness Sheikh Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ireland, Italy, JP Morgan, Japan, 'la Caixa' Foundation, LDS Charities, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Republic of Korea, Russian Federation, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom, United States of America, Vodafone and other private donors.
