Gates Foundation gives $220 mln for TB research

Microsoft billionaire Bill Gates and his wife are to give $220 million over five years to the non-profit biotech firm Aeras to develop vaccines to fight tuberculosis, a company statement said Thursday. "This infusion of funding must be seen as a global call to action in response to one of the world's deadliest diseases," said Jim Connolly, Aeras's president and chief executive, expressing gratitude for the massive grant. It will provide approximately half of the estimated cost of meeting 2012-2016 milestone targets, while addressing significant scientific questions that must be answered in order to further successful development of new vaccines.

n May 2011, President Obama and Prime Minister Cameron reaffirmed our mutual commitment to improving the lives of the world's poorest people through theU.S.-UK Partnership for Global Development. In June 2011, at the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization Replenishment Conference, the U.S. and the UK worked together to secure commitments that exceeded GAVI's $3.7 billion request by $500 million. The funds pledged will allow GAVI to immunize more than 250 million children in the world's poorest countries by2015, preventing more than 4 million premature deaths. 

Ghana to Produce Meningitis Vaccines

The Minster of Health, Mr. Sumani Alban Bagbin, has disclosed that the World Health Organisation WHO) has given Ghana the approval to produce four main meningitis vaccines, including that of Cerebro-Spinal Meningitis (CSM).
