Developing country vaccine industry

GAVI wants to help shape a broader, healthier global vaccine market, with increased participation from vaccine industries in developing countries, to improve vaccine affordability. Therefore representation on GAVI Alliance Board is essential.

The developing country vaccine industry is currently represented on the GAVI Alliance Board by:

Serum Institute of India, Ltd
Board Member: Dr Suresh Jadhav, Executive Director, Serum Institute of India
Term of Office: March 2008 to March 2010

The Serum Institute, as a member of the Developing Country Vaccine Manufacturers Network (DCVMN) represents this voluntary, public health-driven alliance of enterprises – state-owned and private, large and small – from developing and middle-income countries.

An important partner in the GAVI Alliance

The DCVM is an important partner as its goals are aligned to GAVI’s and its members have a shared interest in global networking and collaboration.

Its goals are:

  • Provide a consistent, sustainable supply of affordable quality vaccines – in particular, those needed by developing countries and those of limited interest to industrialised nations and large pharmaceutical firms.
  • Obtain recognition of the essential role that developing country vaccine producers play in assuring availability of vaccines to immunise every child in the developing world.
  • Encourage the research and development efforts of full members to meet the vaccine needs of the developing world.
  • Assist prospective and associate members of the network to attain WHO prequalification status.
  • Foster collaboration and communication amongst members and actively participate in the work of the international vaccine community to accomplish specified goals.

Vaccine institutions providing technical support to the DCVMN network include WHO, the International Vaccine Institute, The Netherland Vaccine Institute (NVI – formerly RIVM), PneumoADIP, USAID, NIH/US FDA and PATH.

All full members of the DCVMN, located in countries with fully functioning regulatory authorities, are prequalified by WHO to supply vaccines both to domestic and international markets, including UNICEF and WHO and GAVI, who only support vaccines which are prequalified by WHO.
